Imagine

Imagine

I had a phase in high school where I got really into The Beatles and John Lennon. Imagine is a classic and one of my favorite tunes to help change my mindset after a disappointment.

This week has been an emotionally trying one for our country as a whole. Regardless of how you voted or who you hashtagged with the world looks far different than it did a few days ago. I have never been one to engage in politics, certainly not on social media - but Wednesday morning my feed was filled with so much nastiness and bitterness I could barely stomach it. I shared the following sentiment:

“I remember seeing an interview with Big Papi years ago where they asked what he would do if there wasn't a Red Sox team. He said he'd make a new team with his friends and call it the Red Sox. I'd like to make a new America, with my friends and call it America. One where I don't wake up to SO much hate filling my Facebook. One where I have hope for the future. Who's in?”.

I happened to catch the clock at both 11:11am and 11:11pm that day and my wish was simple - peace. Love. A better, brighter future. Less hate. Perhaps naive I have to believe we are better as a nation than to burn flags and angrily riot in the streets. Really, we are better than this.

My friend Erica mentioned that she played “Imagine” at the end of her workout class as the cooldown and it reminded me that the future isn’t hopeless as some would have you believe. While we can’t control everything we can control both how we react to everything and how we treat each other. Kindness goes a long way, so does working hard to better your family, your community etc.

My friend Todd shared this and it perfectly summed up everything I was feeling at the moment:

I'm not saying you have to like to results or even the President. You can be angry, hurt, confused, disillusioned, fearful - you 100% have the right to feel however you feel. HOWEVER (all caps because I mean biz) you also have a duty as a citizen and a human to make the world around you a better place. I live by the code of trying to leave everyplace and everyone a little more sparkly, a little better off than before I was there. If I can brighten someone's day I will because really, life is just a series of days strung together. Let's work together to make those days better. We owe it to each other and we owe it to the world. <3
