So I was never a huge NSYNC fan but the “in a few days it's gonna be May" memes TOTALLY made me giggle. (Although admittedly I didn't get it the first time I saw it. Haha).

April was... Such A MONTH. I tackled Whole 30 and competed with two fabulous new friends from my Studio in a bracket style competition. We didn't win but we totally kicked ass and I'm proud to say I took a ton of classes outside my normal comfort zone including TRX and an actual boxing class!

It was a time to try new things and I'm surprised by how much I resist change. The first few days of Whole 30 I didn't want to give up cream in my coffee (eye roll, THAT'S not my problem and I know it). However I decided to not half ass this. I believe in using my FULL ASS (and Lord knows I have enough ass). I ditched the dairy (cream, sour cream, yogurt, ice cream - gone!), sugar, grains and legumes. I can't lie, sometimes it was fucking tough. Going out to eat with these guidelines is challenging and not every place is super understanding so I ended up not socializing much. I missed the ease of grabbing something from the fridge or Starbucks (loved their breakfast sandwiches before this) and while I did prep some weeks I didn't others and that made it tough. Pulling together a healthy breakfast / lunch dinner is much easier if you already have veggies prepped or something made that can be reheated. Also I missed peanut butter! It's was a huge go to and so weird to not eat for a month! I substituted with almond butter, tried cashew butter but wasn't impressed and tried sunflower butter - also very much NOT impressed.

So what DID I eat?

For breakfast I rotated between Lara Bars / raw nuts (pistachios and almonds are favs) / sweet potato hash / quick egg frittatas with any leftover veggies and egg muffins (turkey sausage / veggies). Coffee? Mmmm I drank it black for a week then decided to try unsweetened almond milk and liked it enough to stick to it. However, coffee is ONLY a breakfast thing now…. Not a 3x a day thing.

For lunches and dinners I ate zucchini noodles with protein, cauliflower rice with veggies and protein (usually chicken) and tons of roasted veggies (asparagus, brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes, green beans) with shrimp or chicken or steak and sometimes fish. I made a ton of salads with my beloved spinach and arugula and tried to incorporate as many things I could to keep it exciting (tomatoes, no sugar pickled onions, scallions etc etc). I mixed things up as much as I could and often! I also added lime juice and lemon juice instead of sauces and found citrus plus garlic was usually much better than any sauce or dressing. I did miss soy sauce but knowing how much sodium ruins my body (hello bloating) I decided I didn't miss it THAT much. Also given I have an intolerance to coconut (hives) I couldn't use coconut aminos or coconut oil.

Before or after workouts I'd have a Lara bar / raw nuts/ an apple with almond butter or a smoothie from Whole Foods w/ flax seed. Depends on the workout and the timing of my day.

So how did I fare?
Bloating? Gone!
Headaches? Gone!
General lethargy? Gone!
 
AND I've dropped 21 pounds. Woohoo!

So ‘member earlier when I said cream wasn't my problem? Yeah well it might be. I reintroduced dairy this weekend and felt AWFUL. Bloated, gassy, stomach ache, nausea it was awful and caused missed plans and missed workouts. So I'm sticking with my almond milk from here on out!

Going forward I'm also determined to stick to veggies with every meal but I'm excited to add quinoa back in. Prior to whole 30 one of my favorite things was quinoa bowls and I miss them.

Now from a workout standpoint I've realized I've shied away from TRX and other challenging things because I felt like they pushed me too much. I have to ask for too many modifiers, I shouldn't be taking this if I can't do ½ the moves yadda yadda. Erica, TRX queen is a sweetheart and always so quick to offer me a alternative while continuing to challenge me. Could I do squats on one leg for a whole set? Maybe not… But could I try a few during the set? Totally. I'm happy to say I'll be taking many more of these challenging workouts from here on out. Great things never come from comfort zones and all that.

Lastly in April I let go of a relationship that wasn't working anymore. Sometimes people come into your life to get you on a new path but they aren't necessarily meant to stay in your life. I'm grateful for what this person brought but also grateful to let him go so I can continue growing.

Bring it in May, I'm ready for whatever you're bringing me. :)

I'm also not sure what I want to accomplish this month so stay tuned and see if I figure it out, haha.
